Job Title: Designer (contract)
Work Location: Flexibility in location with a preference for NYC
Position: PT 10-20 hours per week
The gig economy is changing the way we work, but it has widened a massive hole in our social safety net: access to benefits for independent workers. People have been talking about this problem for years, but we’re finally doing something about it for millions of low-wage workers who are critical to our economy. We are looking for a detail-oriented designer to guide and execute the visual and UX experience of Alia, a portable benefits platform which is our answer to this social problem.
Alia is the first portable benefits platform, enabling house cleaners to receive benefits like Paid Time Off, and insurance products including life, accident, disability, and critical illness insurance. We are the first platform of our kind, and launched nationwide in December 2018. We've generated some great buzz in the press (WIRED, Fast Company, San Francisco Chronicle.)
Alia is a project of NDWA Labs, which is the innovation arm of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, one of the country’s most dynamic and successful social change organizations. We are using technology to make work better for domestic workers, who are the people who work in our homes including nannies, house cleaners, and caregivers of the elderly and people who are disabled, and have been excluded from most efforts to improve work for workers in the United States.
Call us crazy, but we’re trying new solutions to fix really, really old problems. Experimentation is in our DNA. We’re obsessed with workers, and we’re the ones to bring every conversation - whether about the future of work, the gig economy on the social safety net - back to what workers need. We love sitting at the uncomfortable intersection of nonprofit / labor organization / tech startup. We’re not afraid to try 5 not-so-great ideas to get to 1 really good one, but we’ll evaluate and make a call quickly. We think that if people work, they deserve benefits.
You love visual communication and designing user experiences. You are detail-oriented, maybe to a fault, and believe that every touchpoint matters. You’re obsessed with the user and want to test every assumption you make about how they will experience your design. You’ve been following the gig economy closely, and are a customer of a few platforms yourself. You deeply understand that context matters, and you’re excited about this project because we’re designing for a population typically overlooked by Silicon Valley. You think that if people work, they deserve benefits.
Web design for new product features, beginning with developing a deep understanding of the user, and including user testing as part of the design process.
Produce and update (ongoing) promotional materials such as flyers and stickers.
Integrate user research and testing to create design solutions to existing features that are underperforming. Alia’s users are divided into two populations: clients and cleaners, each typically having different levels of technical literacy, creating both a challenge and a design opportunity.
Support development of a visual identity consistent across all touchpoints that communicates Alia’s brand.
